Google tonight announced its new video marketplace. The fact that their video site was going to evolve from its current state was clear from when video.google.com went live in beta, but there are a couple of items in this press release that I think are a really big deal.

1. Greencine.com
Greencine is a well-established service, offering many independent and foreign titles. They have an existing on-demand service. It will be interesting to see if this coincides with an expansion of their on-demand offerings. Regardless, Google’s backing gives it a legitimacy that should establish it as a viable player to compete with the closed-silo Vongos and Starz.

2. iPod and PSP compatibility
This means no Windows or Apple DRM. This is fantastic. No other commercial on-demand download service offers this level of un-DRM’ed compatibility. This means I’m one step closer to quitting my bittorrent download habit.
